The Rough-Face Girl

Adapted from the book by Rafe Martin, Adaptation by Diane Smith
Picture
Children's Performing Arts is excited to present the opportunity for students to be involved in an original adaptation of the book The Rough-Face Girl by Rafe Martin.  The story of the Rough-Face Girl is from Algonquin Indian folklore and one of the most haunting, powerful versions of the Cinderella tale ever told.  In a village by the shores of Lake Ontario lived an invisible being. All the young women wanted to marry him because he was rich, powerful, and supposedly very handsome. But to marry the invisible being the women had to prove to his sister that they had seen him. And none had been able to get past the sister's stern, all-knowing gaze.  Then came the Rough-Face girl, scarred from working by the fire. Could she succeed where her beautiful, cruel sisters had failed?

Meet the Director: Diane Smith
“Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them.”  -Lady Bird Johnson
This quote is the foundation of my beliefs when parenting, teaching, and directing children.  It is because of this simple truth that young performers continue to amaze audiences with talent beyond their years.  I have had the honor of being a part of Lincoln Elementary PTA Productions for five years, and in the spring of 2018, I will direct our 6th production, Oklahoma, Jr.  It was in my living room in St. Paul where I heard my very first musical on our record player 40 years ago!  I know, I said record player!  It was either West Side Story, Fiddler on The Roof, Camelot, My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, or Oklahoma, as I can still picture the album covers to this day, and I would dance around and sing the songs, creating in my head how the actors would be.  Little did I know this would land me on a stage directing little ones today!  Oklahoma, Jr. will be my last performance at Lincoln as my youngest child, George, will be moving on to Middle School.  Leaving Lincoln brings a lump in my throat as it has been my family for the past 7 years, but with this door closing, I am humbled and excited that Kari has invited me to be a part of the Children’s Performing Arts program, and look forward to entering a new door where the show will go on!
I live in Forest Lake and live with my husband, Don, my two children, Olivia and George, cherish visits from my 26 year old, Josh, and his girlfriend Kayla, snuggle with my Wheaten Terrier, Barney (who plays with our Fancy Bearded Dragon, Toothless), and take care of two goats and many chickens on our little homestead.

The Rough-Face Girl Volunteer Requirements:
Families are asked to volunteer at 1 practice, 1 performance, and to assist with set strike after the final performance.
Why do you require background checks for volunteers?

Every year, CPA relies on its volunteers to assist to create successful programs.  Our volunteers fulfill roles as guardians, costume and stage assistants, lead chaperones, and so much more.  We are so fortunate to have parent volunteers and their vital contribution to CPA’s success.  We could not do what we do without you.  CPA takes seriously its commitment to promoting a safe, secure and welcoming environment for our young participants.  All volunteers (with the exception of our Junior Directors) will be required to complete a CONFIDENTIAL background check.  The ultimate goal is to verify identity and prevent unidentified individuals from entering rehearsal practices or jeopardizing a child’s safety.  The safety of the children enrolled in our program is of the highest priority to us!  Cost for background checks is $17.00.  CLICK HERE for more info.

Participation Fee for The Rough-Face Girl is $190.00.  Price includes classes and tshirt.
We also require a $25.00 non-refundable Registration Fee per child (paid once annually for our programs).
